There are some basic shapes that that share common names. These shapes are given names, so that there is some degree of universality in the industry.

Ring Size is the width of your cigar. The ring gauge is measured in units of 1/64th of an inch. A 64-ring cigar would be one inch in diameter. Most cigars are between 32 and 52-ring size.
Try to select a cigar with a larger ring size if you tend to have a heavy draw. A smaller ringed cigar will tend to taste harsh if your draw is heavy. This is because you are scorching your smoke. Even the finest cigar won't taste proper if you don't know your draw.
Cigars such as Gigantes or Presidentes are the largest cigars, they have ring sizes that can be as high as one inch. Thin is less than 42 ring size. Thick is greater than 47 ring. The Demitasse are the smallest and have ring sizes as small as thirty.

The size of a cigar is measured by two dimensions: its ring gauge (its diameter in sixty-fourths of an inch) and its length (in inches). For example, most non-Cuban robustos have a ring gauge of approximately 50 and a length of approximately 5 inches. Robustos which are of Cuban origin always have a ring gauge of 50 and a length of 4 7/8 inches.
