Like most finer things, cigars improve with age. During the rolling process, various strands and tobacco leaves are blended together to give each cigar its unique flavor and aroma.
Once cured and fermented, the tobacco must be aged. The bales, either wrapped in burlap or stored in huge boxes, sit in vast, temperature-controlled warehouses for up to two years, and sometimes longer. It is at this time that the marriage process begins.
As the cigars start to age, the oils from different leaves begin to marry together. It is a continuous process which over time improves the stability and complex subtleties of the smoke. Proper aging requires a highly accurate climate, precise timing, and a great deal of patience. |
